Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastien Kehl has insisted he’s not looking at a permanent deal for Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen at this moment in time, despite a ‘loophole’ opening the possibility of a deal in the summer.
The Dortmund sporting director has been speaking to Sky in Germany about the deal to bring in Maatsen on loan from Chelsea in January.
The defender joined the German side on loan in the middle of January after a frustrating first-half of the season at Stamford Bridge following his loan deal at Burnley last season.
He had been expected to join Vincent Kompany’s side on a permanent deal in the summer but that never happened, and he returned to Chelsea, where he struggled to impress Mauricio Pochettino enough to give him regular minutes.
He’s now hoping to get them at Dortmund between now and the end of the season, at which point a decision will have to be made about his future once again.
His current loan deal doesn’t include a purchase option for Dortmund, but Sky report they could take advantage of a ‘loophole’ in the fact Maatsen has a release clause in his current Chelsea deal.
Kehl doesn’t want to comment on that though, instead saying it will all depend on Dortmund’s financial power in the summer.
“It’s good that we have the boy here now,” he said.
“We can watch him intensively and get to know him on and off the pitch and of course we will then deal intensively with the situation.
“But that’s not something that concerns me at the moment, because we still have a little time for it. But of course, we’ll see what we can do in the summer and, above all, what’s economically feasible. Unfortunately, that’s always a big topic.”
