Following reports regarding Newcastle United’s attempt to sign Vasco wonderkid Andrey Santos, the Brazilian club has gone public to explain their stance.

Director Paulo Bracks was interviewed by Globo Esporte, and when speaking of the player, he made it clear that their intention is to keep the teenager to let him be part of a strong team they’re building for the next year.

“Vasco does not have, under this new management, a need to sell athletes. There will be financial stability at the club. Obviously, business will happen. But within an acceptance. From normal negotiations,” Bracks told Globo Esporte.

“Vasco’s contracts will be stronger and stronger. There is no proposal on the table. Many people approached him. A lot of people who shouldn’t, by the way. Andrey is a Vasco player, with a secure contract. If there is a possibility to negotiate, we will. But not this year.”

Globo Esporte were the same outlet who initially reported Newcastle’s bid for the youngster. They claimed the Magpies were offering €35m, and his staff liked the proposal.

The attempt was then backed up by Goal Brasil. However, they claimed that the bid would only be delivered in the coming days, and Vasco were expected to turn it down, just like they’ve already done with previous attempts from other clubs.

Journalist Jorge Nicola was another one talking about this proposal, but with different information. He claimed that the Magpies’ offer was actually €20m, and there’s ‘no chance’ of an agreement for that amount, as the Brazilian club want at least €37m with the sale.

Regardless of who’s right, it seems clear Newcastle are making an effort to land Andrey Santos soon.
