Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez could end up costing Manchester United as much as €64m should the bonuses in his deal be achieved.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, who provide the finer details of the player’s move to Old Trafford today.
They say that while Ajax will see Martinez leave ‘with a pain in their hearts’, the figure they’re receiving from Manchester United ‘compensates a lot’.
According to the newspaper, Edwin van der Sar has ‘made the most of it’ in negotiations with his former club securing a deal worth €54m with €10m in bonuses.
That makes Martinez the third most expensive departure in the history of the Dutch club behind Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt.
Ajax have ‘pulled off a real feat’ with the deal, considering the first bid they received was from Arsenal for €25m and €5m in bonuses. It was their bidding that ultimately caused his price to ‘skyrocket’.
They’re now set to earn nearly three times as much from the deal, should the €10m in bonuses during his time in Manchester.
The nature of those bonuses isn’t mentioned, but Martinez has signed a five-year deal with Manchester United, so the usual ones that are included in deals such as this, for example, appearances and goals, are very likely to be.
