When covering news about loanees at this stage of the season, we’re used to seeing many clubs still thinking about making the spells permanent moves in the summer.
But this isn’t the case of Pedro Porro. The fullback, who was sent by Manchester City to Sporting last year, only needed a few months to convince the Lions to go for his signing.
The Lisbon side have a buying option of €8.5m to get the player, and many reports from the Portuguese media have been claiming they’ll use it once the season comes to an end, even though they have until 2022 to trigger the clause.
Now it turns out that Porro’s season with Sporting has been so good that the Lions don’t know if they can keep him for longer. That’s a story told today by newspaper Record.
They say the future of the 21-year-old is one of the ‘uncertainties’ for the summer.
Sporting decided to buy Porro ‘long ago’, and the issue is that he’s doing great for the club and could be called up for the Euros. That means the Portuguese side could end up receiving an offer with an ‘irrefutable amount’, and that’s why the club are already working on other defenders to become an alternative for him.
Manchester City spent €12m to sign Porro from Girona in 2019 and never used him. They first sent him on loan to Real Valladolid, and last summer, agreed a two-year spell with Sporting.
Reports from the Portuguese media previously said that Pep Guardiola’s side would have an option to buy him back from the Lions, but that possibility is rarely mentioned these days.
