Pau Lopez to Tottenham took a twist at the beginning of March when it was reported in Spain that Tottenham were trying to talk down the price of a transfer.

Spurs have a clause in Pau’s loan which means they can buy the goalkeeper for a fixed fee of €7m, or send him back and pay a €500k figure for not making the loan permanent, that’s on top of the €600k loan fee already paid.

Tottenham were said to want to get the €7m figure down to as little as €3m, which of course Espanyol weren’t altogether keen on.

A director at the Spanish club was quoted as saying: “I know that Pau Lopez is happy, we do not hear from Tottenham; They know what they have to do, they have to pay seven million and if so he will not be an Espanyol Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 08.09.13player. The option will not be lowered.”

Well, talks have clearly progressed, because Catalan newspaper Sport report on Friday that Espanyol are ‘confident’ a deal is set to be completed, and Pau will be a permanent Tottenham player, back-up to Hugo Lloris.

Don’t be surprised if there’s more twists in this one yet.
