Last summer, a strange rumour emerged that Matty Longstaff was being followed by Udinese and could sign for the Serie A side.
There was talk of the Italians offered the Newcastle United midfielder a five-year contract, but the now 21-year-old eventually signed an extension at St James’ Park to keep him there until 2022.
Now one year away from that contract running down, it’s being reported by Corriere dello Sport that Udinese are once again chasing the Magpies man.
They state the Serie A club have ‘come back’ for Longstaff, recalling ‘he had already been followed by the Friulians in the past’.
Not only that, but he ‘had never gone off the radar of the observers’, suggesting the plan to sign him from Newcastle, whether it be then or now, has never changed.
It’ll be now up to the Pozzo family to decide how much they are willing to tempt Steve Bruce and co. with this summer if they indeed fancy the Rotherham born midfielder in Udine next season.
