In need of playing time last season, Tottenham Hotspur’s Juan Foyth joined Villarreal on a loan deal and the La Liga side had an option to make his stay permanent for €15m this summer.
Unai Emery used the Spurs player as a right-back and also in the heart of his back four, and his versatility and performances had already convinced the manager to retain the 23-year-old for next season.
The Argentina international has a year left on his contract with the Premier League side and the Yellow Submarine wanted to take advantage of this, to complete the defender’s signing on a low-cost operation.
Foyth has been a ‘priority’ target for the Europa League winners, and this is again echoed in Friday’s edition of AS.
It’s claimed Villarreal chief Fernando Roig ‘closes’ the signing of the South American after the Spanish club and Tottenham ‘closed the agreement’ for Foyth’s transfer.
Emery’s side, however, couldn’t convince Spurs to offer a discount in the end as the report states the two clubs decided to close the deal ‘for an amount close to €15m’.
Foyth will be Villarreal’s first new signing for the 2021/22 season, and an announcement will be on the way.
