Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg is currently on loan at 1.FSV Mainz 05, who are fighting to stay in the Bundesliga. They are 15th in the table, two points above 16th placed Union Berlin with one game remaining.
Last month, SportBild stated the Reds have informed Mainz that they have no plans to send the 22-year-old out on loan to a second division club.
A fresh report from Bild states several players at the German club have uncertain futures and the Liverpool man is included in this list.
It’s explained that the centre-back has ‘delivered constantly’ this season, where he’s made 35 appearances, scoring two goals in the process.
The Bundesliga side’s leaders have a ‘clear goal’ to extend the Dutchman’s stay beyond this season. The report further states ‘the chances are good’ for defender to continue at Mainz because of the ‘pre-negotiated’ deal, likely with Liverpool.
As per the deal the German club will have the ‘right of first refusal with a transfer fee. There’s no mention of the exact figure, but it may be between €4m and €7/8m.
Although this ‘could benefit’ Mainz, Bild say the ‘probability of a transfer’ is at 30%. In other word the defender is more likely to return to Liverpool than continue where he is.
