The president of SPAL has told the Italian media he’s happy Mirco Antenucci has joined the club. The 32-year-old was being tracked by a number of other clubs after being released by Leeds United last month.

TMW have reported on comments Walter Mattioli’s made yesterday when it was officially announced Antenucci had become a SPAL player.

Mattioli revealed he was proud the former Leeds United star turned down chance to go to another club in order to join the Serie B new boys. Mattioli went on to say the signing of Antenucci is one of the best signings he’s made in his football career.

“I still have dreams to realise. I am proud that Antenucci has chosen us. For me it is one of the most important signings in my career,” said the SPAL president.

Yesterday it was confirmed Antenucci had signed a two-year contract with SPAL after turning down the chance to sign for other Serie B sides, and also Championship club Reading.

SPAL won Lega Pro last season, and have shown their intent to push on from this by signing a proven Serie B forward in Antenucci.
