River Plate director of football Enzo Francescoli has insisted they never once spoke to Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani about a move to the club.
Cavani is currently in the final year of his deal at Old Trafford and is expected to leave the club as a free agent in the summer.
He had been linked with a move away before then, with reports throughout December and January linking him to clubs in Europe and South America.
While Barcelona were believed to be keen on him before they signed Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal, River Plate were also named as suitors as well.
Their reported interest came late in the window, with it suggested the veteran striker could be a replacement for Julian Alvarez, who will be joining Manchester City in the summer.
Cavani eventually decided to stay at Manchester United, with manager Ralf Rangnick later admitting he had asked the striker to see out his contract.
And it now seems the option of River Plate was not on the table anyway, with their director of football Francescoli telling Supermitre, “I never spoke with Cavani. There were no negotiations at all”.
That puts an end to those rumours for the time being, then, although it will be interesting to see what happens with Cavani in the summer.
He is destined to leave Manchester United, but whether he remains in Europe or decides now is the time for a move to South America remains to be seen.
It would be easy to imagine him choosing the former, having proven at Old Trafford that despite being 35-years-old, there is still plenty left in the tank.
