On Friday, Alexandre Mendy spoke to the French media and happily and enthusiastically said he’s decided to join Sunderland.

The SM Caen striker was Ligue 2’s top scorer last season and has had approaches from Saudi Arabia. However, the 30-year-old gave it all some reflection and decided that Championship football, and specifically Sunderland, is the move his heart desires.

In true cult-hero-in-waiting status, he explained he’d watched every series of Sunderland ‘Til I Die, and that had helped persuade him that the club is the place he wants to be, and the fans are those he wants to give everything for next season.

Mendy even spoke about his excitement ahead of a potential medical and travelling to England with his family.

Unfortunately, there’s now a problem.

Sunderland haven’t agreed a fee with Caen, and Saturday’s edition of Ouest France covers Mendy’s comments and then makes it very clear a move isn’t close.

According to the French newspaper, Caen are ‘waiting for an offer that matches the level of their star striker’, and such a bid hasn’t arrived at this stage.

Just let him go Caen, this one cannot collapse.
