Hamburg have announced they’ve made a loss of €13.4m for the last financial year, which has put the Bundesliga side in further debt.
With Hamburg debts now totally €81m this could put a question mark over some of the club’s highest earners, which would include Leeds United loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
According to Hamburger Morgenpost the German side’s financial problems haven’t been helped by investments in player, which has increased the wage bill.
However, before Hamburg spent on improving the squad in the past two windows Lasogga was already earning a reported €59K a week, which was a reason they offloaded him to Leeds United.
Leeds United are paying a percentage of Lasogga’s Hamburg salary, and come the summer his parent club will have a decision to make on whether he returns to Germany.
Sporting director Len Todt recently suggested Lasogga could still have a future at Hamburg, but given their financial position his wage is still a concern, especially given he looked surplus to requirements in the summer.
With his impressive start at Leeds United there’s a possibility the Championship side could look to make his move permanent next summer.
It’s likely it would be dependent on Leeds United retuning to the Premier League because of his salary demands, but promotion is a possibility this season.
Hamburg’s debt, with the club’s local newspaper likens to a Halloween scare, will certainly help Leeds United in any negotiations.
