The reports from Turkey saying Anderson Talisca was close on joining Manchester United had a big impact in England, Portugal, Brazil, and obviously Turkey.

However, that those reports were originally based on Portuguese claims which had been mistranslated wasn’t so widely covered.

At Sport Witness we made that clear to our Twitter followers on Tuesday, but the story continued to spread, despite the origins of the claim being absolutely nothing at all.

Since then, the story has thankfully died a little.

First, Besiktas, where Talisca is on loan, director Metin Albayrak spoke to the local press and said that in case Manchester United try a deal for the midfielder, they must be warned first, which didn’t happen. The player still has one more year of loan at the Turkish side before joining Benfica again.

Portuguese outlet Record also has some quotes from Talisca’s agent Jessé Carvalho, who reportedly spoke to the Brazilian media (even though we could not find the original source). The representative allegedly said: “I have no idea where it came from. No one spoke to us.”

But where could it come from? Talisca may hold some blame in encouraging the Manchester United rumours. The player recently appeared live on Brazilian TV saying Mourinho loves him, and talking up a possible transfer.
