Spanish newspaper Sport on Thursday take a look at what Monchi is going to get up to at AS Roma this summer. Leaving Sevilla, where he’d made himself a legend among sporting directors, Monchi is obviously under a lot of pressure to perform transfer miracles in Rome.
A Serie winning team wasn’t built in a day, and Monchi has a lot of work on to start the change in direction. Sport have compiled a list of possible business, and Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny is at the top of it.
As far as Sport are concerned, Roma are accepting that Szczesny is off back to Arsenal in the summer. From there he could join Napoli if Pepe Reina leaves the club.
There’s a similar line in some of the Italian media, but we’re not so sure. Roma probably don’t want to look too desperate for Szczesny, they’re not going to get a good deal that way, and this could be part of the plan.
If Arsene Wenger decides that Petr Cech is to continue for another season as Arsenal’s first choice, then it’s unlikely Szczesny will jump to be his deputy. In that scenario, Roma may believe they can get another loan on reasonable terms.
The only snag is Szczesny’s Arsenal contract ending in June 2018, that would have to be extended first.
