Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali was on target for Italy in their 2-1 loss against Germany in the first leg quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

The midfielder also put in an impressive performance and has kept going since his dominant showings for the Azzurri since the last international break.

The Italian press have now hailed the Newcastle United star, with both TuttoSport and Corriere dello Sport giving him a rating of 7.5 for his performance on Thursday night.

TuttoSport refer to the 24-year-old as ‘Magic Sandro’ and state that he ‘closes the week as a king’, especially after he won the Carabao Cup with Newcastle United at the weekend.

They believe Tonali played like a ‘total midfielder’ against Germany, showing that Italian players should never be against playing abroad.

Corriere dello Sport describe his performance as ‘unstoppable’ and state that the ex-AC Milan star gave everything fans would want from their ‘favourite midfielder’. They also compare Tonali to Simone Perrotta, who won the World Cup with the Azzurri in 2006.

These are definitely great signs for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe, considering that the Tyneside club are still very much in the hunt for an automatic Champions League spot.

If Tonali keeps improving, this will only enhance their chances of finishing higher up in the Premier League.
