Even though Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles had some regular playing time in his first weeks at Roma, his situation seems to have taken a drastic turn lately.

Outlet Roma Today features on Thursday a story on Nicola Zalewski, who was given by manager José Mourinho his first start at the weekend.

The report points out that there had been no necessity to bring a new wing-back to the squad, as the Special One used the youngster ‘by meritocracy and not by the emergency’.

Roma Today takes that as a ‘clear message of rejection’ to the other players in the position, including Maitland-Niles.

The outlet already claims that the English player is not staying at the club following his spell from Arsenal, which expires at the end of the season.

They make a point of saying the 24-year-old ‘will return’ to the Gunners once the campaign comes to an end ‘barring twists and turns’.

Arsenal will then have to decide what to do with him, as his contract at the Emirates expires in 2023.
