Newcastle United are ‘very close’ to signing Celta de Vigo star Gabri Veiga, according to reports today.

Spanish outlet Marca claims that the Magpies are now the ‘best placed’ club in the race for the 21-year-old.

It’s fair to say that the story doesn’t have huge details about Newcastle’s pursuit, only pointing out that the club’s economic power saw a big growth since the Saudi takeover.

It’s claimed there’s then a big and direct ‘bet’ on Veiga’s signing, and the midfielder ‘may soon become a new player of the team from the north of England’.

What seems strange in this story is that Marca claims the player’s release clause is of €30m, while all other reports have so far claimed that was of €40m.

Even though Veiga was also said to be a target for Real Madrid, the outlet this time claims he was actually never in the sights of the Santiago Bernabeu side, who prioritised the arrival of Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham this summer.

That opens the path for Newcastle to sign the Spaniard, and perhaps that’s why they’re so confident that the Magpies will win the race.
