During the 2020 summer transfer window, various reports from the Catalan media said a Manchester United proposal to sign Ansu Fati, for in excess of €100m, was turned down by Barcelona.

Josep Maria Bartomeu was then the president of the La Liga side and earlier this week, he claimed he’d rejected an offer of around €150m from an English club.

The 18-year-old returned to the pitch in September, after spending more than 10 months on the sidelines. Since then, he has managed two goals and an assist in five matches.

Fati committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract on Wednesday. His current deal at the Camp Nou expires in 2027 and also includes a release clause of €1bn.

A day after that, Cadena Cope explained the Red Devils were willing to double his wages, had he decided to join them.

Mundo Deportivo journalist Cristina Cubero, in Friday’s edition of the newspaper, further adds that Manchester United were ‘willing to invest €120m for Fati’s signing’, most likely on the transfer fee alone.

United’s hopes of bringing Fati to Manchester were crushed when he signed a new deal with Barcelona.

Cubero goes on to suggest the player decided to commit his future to the club for sporting reasons and if he and his family wanted more money, they would have accepted other offers.

Mundo and other Catalan outlets have done PR for Barca in the past and this one could be added to the list, considering the time [two days after Fati’s renewal] these claims have surfaced.
