Cody Gakpo’s valuation is ‘through the roof’ after scoring for the Netherlands in their 2-0 win over Senegal at the World Cup and his suitors would now have to pay much more than what Leeds United proposed in the summer.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, who highlight the Whites offered €30m plus 13m bonuses to PSV Eindhoven towards the end of the last window. No deal took shape, and the forward has starred this term, managing 16 goals and 18 assists for both club and country.
If the 23-year-old shines in Qatar, then the report explains the Leeds United summer bid ‘will be far surpassed’ in the winter market or next summer.
Former Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder is of the belief his compatriot’s price tag will be decided by how he performs for Oranje at the FIFA tournament.
“How much he will bring in depends largely on this World Cup. If he puts in two or three more here, it could easily be €80m. That’s how it works. The World Cup is a wonderful showcase,” he said.
Sneijder sees Gakpo is now ready to take the next step in his career. He has backed the PSV attacker to seal a move to the Premier League, where Jesse Marsch’s side are said to be one his suitors.
Back in September, journalist Rik Elfrink reported Leeds are planning to make another bid to sign Gakpo in January.
“First, he has to finish this World Cup well and then show for another six months at PSV that he really stands out. His stats are nice, but that doesn’t always tell me everything,” Sneijder explained.
“You have to move a player to another league and then it’s about whether he can handle it there. With his speed and dribbling actions, the English league, where there is a lot of space and you can receive the ball from the side, suits him best.”
