Liverpool can thank Bayern Munich for the signing of Federico Chiesa this summer, as the German side turned down the Italian.

That’s according to journalist Christian Falk, via FCB Inside, who reports that Bayern Munich said no to the opportunity to sign Chiesa before he ended up at Liverpool.

Chiesa joined Liverpool in a €12m deal at the end of August after months of being linked with a move away from Juventus.

The player and the Italian side had been stuck in a deadlock over contract negotiations, with the player refusing to sign a new contract despite being in his final year.

That led to the Italians being keen to offload him to avoid losing him on a free and, after various options, he ended up at Liverpool in a surprise deal.

According to Falk, though, that only happened because Bayern decided against a move. He explained on his recent appearance on his podcast Bayern Insider that Chiesa was offered to Bayern by his agents.

He was available for a bargain fee of €10-15m, but the German giants showed no interested in the Italian international.

They felt they were sufficiently covered in their wing positions, particularly after signing Michael Olise from Crystal Palace for more than €50m.

The Germans turned him down and it was only after this happened that Chiesa decided to move to Liverpool. He joined the Reds in a €12m move, a ‘real top deal’ give his currently market value is €35m.

This, though, feels like nothing more than good old fashioned German propaganda. Falk, and indeed others, have a tendency of doing this sort of thing when it comes to transfers.

Regardless of the player they will often pop up and suggest they were offered to Bayern, or Dortmund and turned down, as if this is some sort of proof that the Bundesliga sides are smarter than everyone else.

The reality in this case is that Chiesa was probably offered to everyone in Europe by his agents and it was simply Liverpool who eventually bit and got the deal done.
