On January 5th, Turkish journalist Berkay Tokgoz reported Fenerbahçe are expected to sign Arsenal’s Mesut Özil.
A Spor have now backed up the Süper Lig side’s interest in the Gunners player and they provide more details on a potential deal.
It’s claimed the Yellow Canaries and the ex-Real Madrid star have ‘reached an agreement in principle’.
Fenerbahçe are fifth in the table and their director of football, Emre Belözoğlu has been working ‘day and night’ to bring new faces to the club.
At the club, there were ‘bomb developments’ regarding a specific player, referring to Ozil, that fans have ‘long dreamed of’.
According to A Spor, he has an agreement with Fenerbahçe for a three-and-a-half-year contract. The outlet further adds ‘Özil is expected to be in front of the camera with his Fenerbahçe kit soon’.
Another report from A Spor states the player will lose €5.5m in sponsor funds, if he leaves the north London club in the mid-season window. To compensate this, Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç is looking for new sponsors himself.
It’s also explained Özil has been wanting to move his family to Turkey and this would also help Fenerbahçe to land him.
Özil hasn’t featured for Arsenal this season after Mikel Arteta left him out of his plans. A move away from the Emirates will see the World Cup winner back on the pitch.
