With Lyon losing Bruno Guimarães and Lucas Paquetá to Premier League clubs this year, it’s understandable that club fans have some anger regarding the departures.
Newcastle United spent around €50m to sign one of their stars, and even though that could be enough money to convince the French side to sell, there was apparently another reason why they accepted the transfer.
Journalist Roman Molina now has a video on Youtube about this situation, and explains that there was ‘pressure’ from Guimarães’ entourage so he could join the Magpies.
“I also remember that Guimarães, who had left during the winter transfer window, his agents had put pressure on OL to leave. Lyon were happy because indeed, financially it helped them, but we must not forget something: the agents of Guimarães did everything to make it happen, even threatening the club,” said Molina (via Tele 7 Jours).
The information was then backed up by journalist Thomas Lacondemine.
“I confirm Molina’s words. The agents of the two players pushed for a departure. The players, much less. And yes, oh surprise, the agents are also attracted by the lure of profit…”
Signed in January, Bruno Guimarães was one of the first signings made by Newcastle’s new ownership, and worked as a statement of the club’s new strength in the European market.
The Brazilian already has 21 appearances for the St. James’ Park’s side, even though he has missed their last three matches due to a muscle injury.
As he works on his recover and to get back to doing well for Newcastle this season, he will certainly be hoping to meet up with his former teammate Lucas Paquetá at the national team in the World Cup this year.
