Barcelona’s failure to sign a new centre-back in the summer, coupled with Gerard Piqué’s injury setback in November, has left Ronald Koeman with a limited number of experienced players in the heart of the back four.

It’s been widely discussed the La Liga side could look to bring in a new defender in the winter market and several names have been pushed forward.

On December 1st, Mundo Deportivo reported Chelsea’s Antonio Rüdiger has already been offered to the Catalan club.

Another report from the same newspaper explained on Tuesday the Blaugrana’s poor financial conditions would make it ‘complicated’ for them to sign the Blues defender.

Journalist Miguel Rico, writing for the last page of today’s Mundo Deportivo claims the Spanish giants’ ‘obvious need’ to strengthen the centre-back position in January has seen agents trying to place their clients at Barcelona.

Rüdiger is ‘one of the most common’ names in that list as the Germany international has hardly featured [five matches in all competitions] for Frank Lampard’s side this season.

Rico claims Barcelona aren’t discussing their target list, but they deny there was or will be any contacts for signing the Chelsea player.

‘Rüdiger is also ruled out’, reads the report’s title as the Camp Nou side have discarded the option to sign him in January.
