Napoli have joined the race to sign Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian, according to claims in the Italian media. The Italy international has yet to figure in a competitive game for the Premier League side this season, which has led to speculation he could return to Serie A after just one season in England.

Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio has claimed this morning that Napoli could look to close in on Darmian after his latest snub. The former Torino defender didn’t even make the bench for Manchester United’s victory over Bournemouth at the weekend, and it seems Jose Mourinho prefers converted winger Antonio Valencia as his number one choice at right back.

Napoli want to strengthen in defence before the transfer deadline, and have plenty of funds available following the transfer of Gonzalo Higuain. The Serie A side have yet to contact Manchester United with regards to signing Darmian, but could soon look to make an approach if the player is available.

Darmian signed for Manchester United last summer from Torino, and showed early promise under Louis van Gaal. However, his debut season was harmed by injury, which resulted in him losing his place to Valencia in the latter stages of the campaign.

The Italian media have been reporting a possible Darmian exit all summer, with clubs including Juventus as AS Roma also linked with the player.
