Calvin Bassey turned down a move to Brighton to join Ajax from Glasgow Rangers this summer.
That’s according to the Dutch side’s technical director Gerry Hamstra, who believes the defender could still end up in the Premier League in the next few years.
Bassey completed a move from Rangers FC to Ajax earlier today, leaving Ibrox to join the Dutch giants as their replacement for Lisandro Martinez.
The defender had been heavily linked with a move away from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side this summer after impressing for Rangers last season, particularly in their run to the Europa League final.
There was interest from the Premier League as a result, but the youngster instead elected to head to the Netherlands, where he will play Champions League football.
They also insist there was interest from West Ham and Nottingham Forest.
This is backed up by Hamstra, who not only confirmed that Graham Potter’s side had made an offer but suggested the player may end up in the Premier League in future anyway.
“He also received an offer from Brighton,” he is quoted as saying.
“He just says: I want to go to Ajax. The same story: two or three years and then go to the top of the Premier League.
“We are in that dilemma as well. We especially want to perform on the one hand, but we also know on the other hand: boys eventually want to make the next step.”
