There were expectations for one of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri to leave Chelsea once they brought in a new left-back.
Ben Chilwell arrived at Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in the summer, but neither ended up moving away from the west London club.
Inter Milan were one of the clubs credited with an interest in the Spaniard, who had played under Antonio Conte at Chelsea.
FcInterNews provides a background on why the Nerazzurri failed to sign the 29-year-old during the last window.
Ajax’s Nicolás Tagliafico was also a target for Inter and Frank Lampard’s side, and Chelsea would have moved for the Argentine had they failed to sign Chilwell.
It’s claimed Tagliafico’s move to the English club would have ‘freed Marcos Alonso’ and Inter would have jumped to take the former Fiorentina man for a reasonable price. Inter still had this opportunity after Chilwell’s arrival.
However, the deal didn’t take shape for two reasons. Inter’s failure to sell Ivan Perišić, and Chelsea’s ‘reluctance’ to cut ties with the player for a reasonable price, ‘blocked’ the Italian club from signing Alonso.
Alonso hasn’t made an appearance since the end of September and it remains to be seen whether he would push for a move away from Chelsea in January.
