Belgian goalkeepers Thibaut Courtois and Simon Mignolet aren’t having the best of seasons so far.
Courtois has been under the microscope with some bending of figures to claim he’s ‘statistically the worst goalkeeper in the Premier League’.
As for Mignolet, he has been displaced from the starting XI by German goalkeeper Loris Karius and the prospects of him winning the spot back look bleak right now.
Courtois has been speaking to Play Sports (via Het Nieuwsblad), and has stuck up for himself, pointing out he’s not doing too badly at all.
The Chelsea goalkeeper made a point of saying he’s very aware of his own failings and knows when he’s made a mistake, and then insinuated his recent criticism has been unfair: “I’m really self-critical enough to realise when I’m in the wrong, and if I have caused a goal. And I think that not too much has happened this season. Only with the Swansea penalty mistake I may have done better.”
Courtois then used Liverpool’s Mignolet as an example of the too much blame being put on a goalkeeper:”In England they just quickly point at the goalkeeper. Just look at what happened to Simon Mignolet. But as for him, he’ll be fine again. Simon is a top keeper.”
Of course, if people don’t like Courtois’ comments, he’ll have been mistranslated again.
