Despite the multiple attempts from Manchester United to sign Frenkie de Jong, Chelsea are also doing their best to lure the Dutchman to the Premier League.
There is a feeling they are better equipped to land him, since they have Champions League football to offer, but they have hit a similar wall to their league rivals.
That’s the fact the player isn’t overly keen on leaving Barcelona, enjoying life there and wanting to make it into Xavi’s side as a regular.
The latter might be a bit difficult, but Sport make it clear on Monday afternoon that Chelsea aren’t going to just walk away.
The Blues are ‘willing to wait until the end of the transfer market to sign the footballer’, knowing full well that Barcelona are under pressure to lower the wage bill.
Their attempts to get De Jong to cut his wages haven’t gone to plan, since he and his agents ‘have refused to negotiate a salary reduction and have not shown a willingness to leave either’.
However, Barcelona aren’t falling for this, and they believe ‘it is a strategy to achieve the best conditions possible’ at either Manchester United or Chelsea, who are the two clubs currently battling for his services.
