When Chelsea decided to sell Tammy Abraham to AS Roma for a rather hefty fee of £36m, they weren’t prepared to let him go entirely.
Feeling he might develop more in Italy, the Blues decided it was best to include a buy-back clause worth €80m, although the Serie A side made sure that wouldn’t become active until 2023.
This means Roma still have a good year and a bit left of the English striker before Chelsea can come waltzing in with their chequebook and lure him home, which they will be very grateful for.
That’s because Abraham is playing extremely well for them at the moment under José Mourinho, with Gazzetta dello Sport dubbing him the ‘King of England’.
Their basis for that is that the former Chelsea striker (19 goals in all competitions) is currently outscoring the likes of Harry Kane (18), Raheem Sterling (13) and both Jamie Vardy and James Maddison (12 each).
The Italian newspaper then touch upon the Stamford Bridge side’s current situation, explaining that even ‘if until a few days ago’, the Blues were ‘wondering about the goodness of the operation’, that’s all put to one side since the club is up for sale.
Down the line, however, things could be very different because ‘Chelsea are Abraham’s favourite team’ and the London club ‘have a right to buy back at €80m’.
For now, though, he’s happy where he is, having made it extremely clear he has fallen in love with Rome, suggesting his future, at least in the short-term (2023?), is in Italy.
