It’s been a while since we’ve covered the Davide Zappacosta situation because the Italian has been injured, recovering from a ruptured ligament in his knee suffered in training.
Only loaned to Roma from Chelsea for the first six months of the season because of the Premier League club’s transfer ban with an option to extend it to the end of the year, the right-back is now in an interesting limbo.
The Serie A club need to decide what they want to do with Zappacosta, as they could easily try and hold onto him until he makes a full recovery, but that would be beyond the January window.
There has been talk of them bringing in a new player to help Alessandro Florenzi, but that would mean reaching an agreement with Chelsea to cancel the loan, which is something they’d reportedly be open to.
However, no decision has been taken yet, and Corriere dello Sport explain both the Blues and Roma ‘will decide in the coming weeks’ what to do with Zappacosta.
That means choosing between him returning to London to continue his convalescence or remain in Rome, which could end up shaping what could be an important January window for the Italians considering their good start to the season.
