Chelsea have ‘tried to sign’ Atlético Madrid’s Marcos Llorente in this summer transfer window.
That’s according to AS on Thursday, who explain the Blues have made an ‘important offer’ to take the 27-year-old away from the La Liga side.
The newspaper provides further details as they claim Chelsea put a €40m proposal on the table for the Spain international.
Unfortunately for Thomas Tuchel’s side, Los Rojiblancos didn’t entertain this proposal since they have no intention of selling the versatile player, who can operate in the middle of the pitch or as a right-back. He is vital for Diego Simeone.
The ex-Real Madrid man, for his part, is said to be ‘very excited’ about the new season at the Metropolitano, knowing that he wasn’t able to perform at his best level during the last campaign.
Llorente’s deal expires in 2027 and AS state it includes a €120m release clause.
After Atlético rejected the west London club’s €40m bid, Simeone’s side referred Chelsea to the player’s buyout clause.
The amount of that isn’t mentioned.
