Once again failing to beat Real Madrid in a Champions League final, Diego Simeone and Atlético Madrid are on a mission to get a new striker for next season.
Despite having a superbly in form Antoine Griezmann (the Euro’s top goalscorer) and a rejuvenated Fernando Torres at his disposal, the Argentinean manager wants someone else, someone like Mauro Icardi.
AS in Spain claim Atlético could go all out for the Inter Milan striker this summer, with the 23-year-old becoming a target after failed attempts at bringing in other targets like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and their former star Diego Costa.
The Chelsea striker, who certainly fits in Antonio Conte’s front two scenario of a big man and a little man, as demonstrated during the Euros, is, according to AS, very likely to stay at Stamford Bridge.
The Spanish newspaper claim Chelsea have rejected a bid for the Spain international from Atlético Madrid already this transfer window, and are refusing to budge on the matter.
This, in turn, has forced Simeone to look elsewhere, and that’s why Icardi has come into the picture.
Atlético’s interest in Diego Costa this summer is nothing new, but a bid being rejected? That certainly is.
Then again, this could also be AS trying to get their readers pumped at the idea of Diego Simeone actually trying for big names.
