A new contract for Sporting youngster Gelson Martins is the club’s priority for the next few weeks, Portuguese newspaper A Bola says.
The 21-year-old currently earns €120k gross per season, and is about to make five times more, as the Lions want to offer a deal of €700k per year. The type of pay rise we could all do with.
There are two reasons why Sporting are desperate to give the winger a new contract.
Firstly because his current wages are far below what most of their senior players make.
Secondly, because of the recently reported Premier League interest in him.
A Bola take claims from The Guardian to say that Chelsea want the winger, but also state that Manchester United and Manchester City are keen on him.
Martins’ current contract runs until 2021, and Sporting are probably renewing for one or two more years. His release clause, which is currently €60m (for a player earning less than €3k a week!), shouldn’t be changed, but this possibility is ‘not ruled out’.
