Chelsea players were obviously gutted for having their winning run stopped by Tottenham Hotspur last night after a 2-0 loss against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. But speaking to ESPN Brasil after the match, Diego Costa and David Luiz still seem to be pretty confident about the title race.
The striker said they knew their streak would be finished some time, but didn’t want it to happen against their London rivals Tottenham: “Unfortunately we knew this moment would come. We didn’t want it to be today, but it happened. Important thing is we continue first in the league, with a five point difference, and now we think of the next match.”
Luiz, like Costa, seemed relaxed about losing to Tottenham, and claimed the title will only be decided in the last fixtures: “We came here with the intent, the same philosophy and the same mentality as we always want to win the games. Unfortunately we couldn’t achieve it.”
“The Premier League you don’t win in March, you don’t win in the start of April, or in the end… you always win it in May. So we’re still in the fight for the tile, we have a good advantage, we’ve been doing an excellent campaign, which is why we’re on top. But there’s still much left for the title, so we must keep working a lot.”
Luiz was clearly comparing the Premier League to his spell at PSG, where he managed to lift the trophy eight fixtures before the end of the league, setting a new record in France.
With the defeat, Chelsea are now five points in front of Liverpool, who also failed to win after a 2-2 draw against Sunderland. Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham have managed to put themselves in third place.
