Popping on for the final two minutes of Chelsea’s 3-1 walk in the park against Arsenal at the weekend, Kurt Zouma finally rediscovered Premier League football since coming off injured with a cruciate ligament rupture in his knee a year ago in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Bought from AS Saint-Etienne in 2014 for just under £12.5m, the 22-year-old centre-back is one of the more highly rated young defenders in his position in Europe, even if he has spent the best part of a year on the sidelines.

Born in Lyon, the 22-year-old spent five years with Saint-Etienne before joining Chelsea, and was asked, due to the rivalry between Lyon and Saint-Etienne on the football pitch, by Canal Football Club if he could ever play for Alexandre Lacazette’s current club.

Relayed by Goal, he said: “Honestly, no. No.”

The two sides played each other at the weekend, with Kurt Zouma’s former side walking away with the three points after a 2-0 win against nine-man Lyon in a heated derby.

The Chelsea defender also recalled his first clash against Lyon, and made clear where his allegiances lie.

He said: “I support Les Verts, for sure. It’s my town, even if I was born in Lyon. My first derby? I had goosebumps everywhere. I didn’t feel good”.

So, it appears that if you ever see Kurt Zouma linked with a move to Lyon somewhere, you can simply dismiss it.
