Chelsea star Reece James remains the ‘great temptation’ for Real Madrid, who are yet to make a move as they’re concerned about his injury record.
That’s according to Bernabeu Digital, who say the Spanish side continue to look at the Chelsea captain as their next potential long-term right-back.
They explain that there is currently a lot of discussion about the position at the Santiago Bernabeu, where they currently have Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez rotating.
Vazquez’s deal expires next summer and is yet to be renewed, while Carvajal’s runs until 2025, but with both now in their thirties, the Spanish giants are looking to the future and possible replacements.
There is one name on their list that ‘stands out above all’ and that is Reece James, who is ‘fundamental’ for Chelsea but not unsellable.
Indeed, they would ‘have no problem’ letting him leave Stamford Bridge if a ‘good offer’ were to arrive for him, eyeing up a huge profit on an academy prospect to help their finances and FFP issues following the monumental spend under Todd Boehly and co.
It is because of that they don’t close the door to selling any player and that includes James, despite him being a key player and captain under Mauricio Pochettino.
The reason Real Madrid have not moved for him is because of his ‘continued injuries’, with a spate of problems over the last few years causing Madrid and Florentino Pérez to hesitate.
They’re keeping a close eye on him, though, as he’s recently returned to full fitness for Chelsea and is ‘achieving the consistency’ needed to fully convince those in charge of Concha Espina.
Whether that leads to a serious move remains to be seen but the interest is there as the club plans for life post Vazquez and Carvajal.
Now, we need to point out that his comes from Bernabeu Digital, who are very much a Real Madrid fan site, so it’s worth taking the report with a pinch of salt for the time being.
It’s not the first time that James has been linked with a move, though, and we suspect it won’t be the last time ever should he remain fully fit and continue impressing under Pochettino.
