Chelsea striker Timo Werner is the ‘one of the most overpaid players on the planet’, something which could scupper his chances of a transfer this summer.
That’s according to BILD’s deputy editor-in-chief Carli Underberg, who says the German is unlikely to be joining one of the elite level clubs should he leave Stamford Bridge.
Werner joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in a £47.7m deal in July 2020 but has struggled to live up to that asking price since his arrival.
He was signed to fill the striker hole in the squad, but has faced criticism, after 19 goals and 19 assists in 80 games so far.
That’s a far cry from the 95 goals and 40 assists in 159 games he managed for Leipzig, numbers which earned him his move to Chelsea in the first place.
There is a growing belief that the Blues could look to sell this summer, and the striker has been linked with clubs in Germany and England as a result.
Underberg says a move to a top club is unlikely to be on the table, though, because of the huge wages he earns in London.
“Werner is certainly one of the most overpaid players on the planet, he earns 20 million at Chelsea,” he told BILD.
“I don’t think he’ll be allowed to move to one of the really big clubs. Chelsea is already the highest he will reach in his career.
“(He’ll move to) one from the category where Werner was strongest, a team like Leipzig. So one of the clubs that chase the really big teams. That’s the category that Werner has to be in.”
