Romelu Lukaku ‘would gladly cut’ his huge wage packet at Chelsea to secure a return to Inter Milan this summer.

That’s according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, who say the Belgian will have to take a significant wage cut if he is to get the move he wants.

Lukaku is looking extremely likely to be sold by Chelsea this summer after a disastrous year back at the club following his €100m move last summer.

After a positive start, the striker has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel, with whom he has also had a very public falling out.

It’s led to reports that he will be sold this summer, and several have made it clear that the striker’s preferred choice would be a return to Inter where he could wear his ‘old crown’ once again.

That’s going to be difficult without help from Chelsea, though, as Inter simply don’t have the finances to make a deal happen.

Gazzetta Dello Sport pick up that thread today and state that the road leading Lukaku back to Milan will have to be one paved with patience if he is to be able to walk down it.

Inter will absolutely think about the possibility of making it happen, but the only possibility for them to do so is on a ‘dry loan’, and Marina Granovskaia ‘never gives gifts to the competition.’

That’s something Chelsea aren’t even considering at this moment in time after spending €115m to get Lukaku last summer. A solution does need to be found, though, with it clear to everyone at Chelsea that Lukaku and Tuchel is a partnership that isn’t working.

For Inter, Lukaku would have to use ‘very sharp scissors’ on his €12.5m a year wages, which is almost double what Inter can afford at this moment in time. Lukaku is happy to do some cutting, although it’s not made clear if he would go that far.

That remains to be seen but the idea is certainly there and this is something that is likely to keep picking up pace between now and the end of the season.
