PSG were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday evening by Real Madrid, the situation many will have expected when the draw was made.
Despite that there’s still shock in the French media which covers PSG closest. Even after the first leg there seemed a genuine belief that PSG could make it through to the next round, and now they haven’t there’s a crisis situation being presented.
Unai Emery is obviously for the chop, having failed to impress enough since his arrival in France, and Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino have been presented as possible candidates.
Whilst the Tottenham manager played for PSG, so there’s that link, it may be considered unlikely he’d jump ship at Spurs for the job. The Parisian project seems so far removed from what Pochettino has been working on at Spurs that the match doesn’t look so perfect.
And, anyway, with what comes across as a huge arrogance on behalf of PSG, Le Parisien only present the Tottenham boss as a possible candidate, someone who is just about doing well enough to maybe be worth considering as an outside option.
Chelsea’s Conte is put forward as a more firm choice, and Le Parisien say PSG have a preference for the Italian. Roberto Mancini, Luigi Di Bagio and Massimiliano Allegri are also possibilities, but it’s Conte said to be leading the way.
It would certainly be entertaining, with Conte known for requiring his players to work incredibly hard in training. Quite what Neymar and the Brazilian enclave at PSG would think about that is unknown, but it wouldn’t likely be a partnership which could live together well for very long.
Dramas between players and coach would seem inevitable should Conte end up at PSG, and the balance of power would surely be tested.
Another option is Luis Enrique, still on a break after his Barcelona exit.
