Chelsea’s Joao Felix has history with both Atletico Madrid and Benfica.
He had a rather frustrating stint at Atletico Madrid after initially breaking out as a star at Benfica. Felix was linked with a return to the Portuguese giants in the summer but ended up at Stamford Bridge instead.
Benfica fans haven’t forgotten about the forward and that became clear when the two sides locked horns in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
The Lisbon club picked up a convincing 4-0 win and Record Portugal carry quotes from local MP Duarte Marques, who observed the game rather keenly.
He told the outlet: “Florentino [Luis] was the star of the game, all he needed to do was dribble. We saw a Benfica worthy of the Third Ring.”
“Sometimes you just have to not invent things to play better and they did it like a real team. Hearing the fans shout for Felix completed Simeone’s humiliation.”
Former Benfica player Paulo Madeira also spoke about the game, describing it as a ‘dream performance’.
“They played, scored, everything went very well. Atlético didn’t have a single goal-scoring opportunity that I can remember. Benfica could have won by more, with a dream performance.”
Things could not have gone worse for Simeone, who has often been blamed for Joao Felix’s failures in Spain. To remind him of that during an embarrassing game will have brought some laughs to Benfica fans.
The forward’s stint at Chelsea has begun well, picking up a goal already.
