Following Harry Kane’s injury, Tottenham were in dire need of a new striker for the second half of the season.
Instead of buying an out and out goalscorer, they decided to lump some money on Steven Bergwijn, while scrambling to get a deal done for a loan with players such as Islam Slimani and Olivier Giroud being looked at.
It’s no secret José Mourinho likes a big forward in his team, and the Frenchman would fit that role perfectly, used as a pivot for the quick wingers around him.
However, Chelsea blocked any exit in January, and the 33-year-old stayed at Stamford Bridge, where he is now expected to run down his contract.
That means he’ll be available on a free, which is, of course, very appealing to many clubs, including Tottenham.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Spurs are one of two clubs providing competition for Lazio, alongside Inter, for Giroud’s services.
While the Rome based side still dream of getting the Frenchman, Tottenham have something of an advantage as the striker’s affinity for London is well known.
In fact, they state his idea of staying in England’s capital ‘has never waned’.
That’s a big boost for Spurs, but with reports in France that Giroud will likely be looking for a role where he can play often in hope of making Euro 2021, and with Harry Kane the main man at the club, this might not be for him.
