Don’t be fooled by the announcement of the renewal, Olivier Giroud to Milan is still very much a running theme in the Italian media.
Corriere dello Sport are the ones pushing it hard on Tuesday, making it clear the player’s ‘hopes of changing his shirt in the summer have remained intact’.
However, for that team to be Milan, he would need to find a way out of Stamford Bridge on a free transfer, as the Serie A side have ‘no intention of paying the London club and are willing to take Giroud only on a free transfer’.
That forces the France international to ‘only go one way’, and that leaves his entourage with the task of ‘working with Chelsea to resolve the contractual issue’.
Once that’s done, they’ll need to agree a two-year deal with Milan, and that shouldn’t be too hard.
It’s stated Giroud ‘has a promise from Chelsea that if a foreign offer comes in, the club could let him go’, but it’s clear the contract extension was in hope of getting a fee for him.
It was sneaky, but definitely worth a try, and now it’ll be up to Giroud and his entourage to try and force an exit if, as Corriere say, his desire to leave remains intact.
