Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is still waiting for the club to contact him regarding his future at the club.

That’s according to Sport, who say the defender is hoping for a contact at the club to sit down and discuss what they plan to do about his contract situation.

The newspaper provides the latest update on the defender’s future as Barcelona seek to wrap up his signature.

They explain that Azpilicueta’s versatility and leadership make him a ‘very interesting player’ for Barcelona, who want to change most of their defence for next season.

The plan is to do that with free transfers, and having already signed Andreas Christensen; they are pursuing the signing of Noussair Mazraoui and Azpilicueta.

While both play on the right, the Chelsea man can also play anywhere in defence, and that makes him an attractive option for Xavi and co.

Talks about a deal have been on for months as Azpilicueta is out of contract in the summer, but the situation has ‘stalled’ due to the sanctions on Roman Abramovich.

That’s seen ‘all financial and work activity’ suspended, meaning the Blues cannot offer out new contracts to players at this moment in time.

Thus, Azpilicueta is stuck as Chelsea have an option to renew his current deal for another season once he reaches 30 appearances, but it’s ‘unclear’ whether that is still valid or has already been activated.

Thus Azpilicueta, who wants to play for Barcelona, is ‘waiting to find out’ who to contact at Chelsea to discuss the matter.

He wants a ‘good exit’ from the club, given he is the current captain and has played there for ten years, but until he knows who to speak with about the matter, he is stuck in limbo.
