Asmir Begovic may well be a reserve with Chelsea but for Bosnia and Herzegovina he’s much more important. Vice captain behind skipper Edin Dzeko, Begovic is one of the key members of the national side.

Capped over 50 times, Begovic has been the country’s undisputed number one for a while, and it must be a slight annoyance to his fans that he’s now Thibaut Courtois’ understudy, even if he’s at a big club like Chelsea.

Away with Bosnia ahead of a World Cup Qualifiers against Greece, on November 13th, Begovic hasn’t been taking part in all the training sessions. That’s obviously led to question of why, and the Chelsea back-up has responded.

Quoted by Bosnia’s Reprezentacija, Begovic explained he’s trying to avoid getting injured on the hard pitches: “I was saving myself the last two days because of a plastic pitch and some other things, but today I am here and I will be ready for Sunday. We know this is a great match. We are playing against a direct rival and the match will be difficult. It is a serious team and we expect a big test in Greece.”

Begovic was inevitably also quizzed on his lack of game time at Chelsea, but he doesn’t sound too concerned about the situation: “I am pleased with my performances, when I get a chance.”
