Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup at the weekend, beating Palmeiras in the final. The match went to extra-time, and Kai Havertz was able to convert a penalty to secure the trophy for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
For the London club it represents a clean sweep of the top tier trophies they could win since Roman Abramovich took over. Despite some pundits making attempts to talk down the value of the victory, the match was a huge deal for Palmeiras and for those in charge at Chelsea, so the occasion will be cherished.
Whilst Havertz may not have had the full impact expected since he moved to Stamford Bridge from the Bundesliga, he’s certainly played a big part in Chelsea’s recent success, coming up with crucial moments.
The penalty conversion was another one of those, and speaking to Germany’s Sport1, Havertz was asked about comparisons with legends of the Premier League side.
He dismissed that, saying: “You are certainly not a legend at the age of 22, but you are part of the successful history of this club. And that stays forever!”
The youngster has big plans for the rest of this season, wanting to cement himself even more in the history of the club: “There are still many big titles to be won. This season alone we have the chance of the Carabao Cup against Liverpool, the FA Cup, and we’re still in the Champions League.”
