Starting on Tuesday, the idea that Lazio could make a move for Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek is picking up some pace in Italy.
Corriere dello Sport have a big splash about it in their Rome specific version of the newspaper, dedicating a good page to the story.
They’re cautious about it, since a transfer from the Premier League to Serie A is never easy, but there are a few details that could play in the Serie A side’s favour.
The first, and most important, is Maurizio Sarri, who played Loftus-Cheek a lot when he was in charge at Stamford Bridge and clearly likes what the England international has to offer.
Furthermore, this isn’t the first time that Lazio have tried to sign the towering midfielder, as Corriere dello Sport explain that two years ago, the player was shown around the Italian club’s facilities ‘in great secret’ ahead of a potential move there.
The move never materialised, partly due to his Achilles injury, but Igli Tare, their director of football, has never forgotten him.
A full transfer would be out of the question, but a loan could be on the cards, especially since Loftus-Cheek spent time away at Fulham last year, failing to make it into Chelsea’s squad.
Whether that happens again for next season remains to be seen, but if Thomas Tuchel finds himself without the need to incorporate the 25-year-old, then a return to work under Sarri could certainly be appealing for Loftus-Cheek.
