Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has ignored his father’s wishes to by deciding to join Barcelona this summer.
That’s according to Sport, who say the defender’s father, who is also his agent, had been advising he stay at Stamford Bridge.
The newspaper explains that Sten Christensen ‘wanted him’ to renew at Chelsea and stay in the Premier League because of the ‘financial conditions’.
However, the centre-back had decided otherwise, electing to sign for Barcelona because ‘it was his dream’ even though they are offering a lower economic amount to the Blues.
Sport explain that Christensen senior was ‘rubbing his hands’ with the contract that Chelsea had offered his son to renew his deal, which expires in the summer.
The fact the defender is set to be a free agent was a ‘big bargaining chip’ he wanted to ‘exploit’ to get his son and client a big contract with a ‘hefty signing bonus’.
Chelsea were willing to pay what was needed and keep the player ‘at all costs’, paying the relevant bonus if required.
Barcelona’s offer ‘did not reach the limits’ that the Blues had proposed, but the idea of a move to Spain left Christensen ‘more excited’.
He won’t earn the same kind of money that was on offer at Stamford Bridge, yet he is attracted by the project presented to him by Xavi, as well as the ‘weight’ that Barcelona still have given their history.
His father has not been able to change his mind on that front and has already resigned himself to a defeat that will leave his bank account slightly less full than it would have been had his son decided to stay at Chelsea.
