David Luiz is often more appreciated outside of England than within, but the good feeling doesn’t extend to his native Brazil.

Both in England and his own country, the Chelsea defender has endured something of a shaky reputation which has at times been unfair.

Every now and again, comes a top performance which serves as a reminder of just what a good footballer Luiz can be when he’s on song and playing with his tail up.

That was the case against Manchester City at the weekend, with the defender not only putting in a good performance at the back, with Pep Guardiola’s side spending much of the game in the ascendency, but also grabbing a crucial goal.

The second, on 78 minutes, after N’Golo Kante had put the Blues ahead, seemed to almost seal victory given how well Chelsea had kept their opponents out.

Gazzetta dello Sport have rated Luiz’s performance highly enough for him to get a place in their European Team of the Week.

Each Monday, the Italian newspaper select an eleven of the best performers from around Europe’s leagues, whilst ignoring their own Serie A, and Luiz is one of three Premier League players to get the nod.
