French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has displaced Kevin Trapp as Paris-Saint Germain’s first choice goalkeeper under Unai Emery.
The 23-year-old spent the last season on loan at Villarreal, and has made remarkable progress in the recent months.
However, Paris-Saint Germain’s former president, Charles Villeneuve, has revealed Areola could’ve made a switch to the Premier League.
Villeneuve has been speaking to French newspaper Le Figaro, and he claims Chelsea offered Areola’s mother €600,000 to sign the goalkeeper when he was 15.
He said: “One day, his mother came to see me and said:”I want my son to stay at Paris Saint-Germain but Chelsea have contacted us and offered €600,000 euros.
“At that time, the rule required us to wait for him to turn 16-year-old to offer him a salary so he could live decently. I told his mother: “We’ll make your son the fourth choice at the club” and they accepted our proposal.”
Chelsea already have Thibaut Courtois and Asmir Begovic at the club, so it’s unlikely at the moment that they’d want to add another goalkeeper.
Areola, on the other hand, would be hoping to make the most of the opportunity presented to him, and establish himself as Paris-Saint Germain’s goalkeeper for the coming years.
