When it was made clear that Romelu Lukaku didn’t want to be at Chelsea any longer, the Blues, who had Thomas Tuchel as their manager at the time, tried to find a solution.
His big transfer fee made it near impossible to find a permanent solution, but a deal was eventually worked out with Inter, where he had come from, to send him back on loan there.
Everyone was happy, Chelsea included, as they could plan without him going forward under their new owner Todd Boehly, who has since fired Tuchel and appointed Graham Potter as his replacement.
Whether the Englishman will want Lukaku at the club going forward remains to be seen, but the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suggests otherwise, especially with the Gabon international doing well in his first few games.
Furthermore, it seems unlikely that the Belgian, who is happy in Italy, would want to return, which is why, as was initially mentioned when the loan was agreed on, there is a chance he spends an extended period of time away from Chelsea.
That’s what Corriere dello Sport discuss on Wednesday, looking at the future of a few players at Inter, adding that ‘the renewal of that loan is a concrete hypothesis, already taken into consideration when closing operation last June’.
First, however, they need Lukaku to return to full fitness, as the striker has been sidelined with an injury since the 3-1 loss against Lazio on August 26th.
Gazzetta dello Sport also have an article on the player, who is close to making a return, and it’s made clear he wants to ‘take back the time lost in London, wearing a Chelsea shirt’.
That says everything you need to know about how the player’s feelings towards his second spell at Stamford Bridge, which suggests he has little to no interest in returning.
